Alfred Pumford and his son Fred earned less than 50 cents per day mining in the coal reserves. Looking for a better life, they salvaged a pick, shovel and a wheelbarrow. Using these meager tools, they began digging Michigan basements.
In 1938, after eight years of hard work and dedication, Alfred realized the potential for beginning a business and founded Alfred Pumford & Son.
In 1945, Bud Pumford joined the company. The small group of men worked tirelessly on residential projects and before long, Alfred Pumford & Son grew into one of the areas most respected home builders.
Soon after establishing themselves as home builders, Pumford Construction provided services to fifteen different General Motors plants. Not only did this give them valuable experience for the future, but it helped to establish their reputation as an industrial contractor.
Pumford Construction continued their work on the General Motors plants and saw steady growth in other markets including retail and recreation. Clients included Toys R Us and the Germania Town Country Club.
In the 1980s, the recession forced Pumford to diversify their markets and expand their construction services to include design-build work.
Pumford Construction became a prominent full service construction provider with the ability to handle projects from concept through completion. The list of clientele expanded along with the business.
In 1997, fourth generation Pumfords, Mark and Matt, purchased the company from their father, Robert Pumford. Robert served as President for 15 years and worked for the company full-time since 1953 when he was 18 years old. Mark and Matt continued the traditions of the original founders while expanding the services provided and improving construction techniques. In 1999, the Pumfords purchased Gregory Construction Company in order to further the company.
Matt Pumford now fully owns and operates the company. Pumford Construction continues to change with the times and utilize its strong trades resume to break into new markets. Recent projects have included chemical processing plants, wastewater treatment facilities, and energy related work. In 2007, Pumford set the bar by designing and building two major Leadership in Energy Environmental and Design (LEED) certified projects.
The Company adds a Chief Operating Officer and two new Vice Presidents to the Leadership Team. Continued growth is facilitated by focused capital investments in Trades Skills and Safety, and by expanding serviceability of Corporate Accounts from regional to state-wide. In early 2017, Pumford Construction establishes its first branch office in Western Michigan.
